Canaan Missionary Baptist Church

About our church

A family of believers on Trask Parkway

Canaan Missionary Baptist Church has gathered in Sheldon, South Carolina for worship, for the teaching of God's Word, and for one another. We are ordinary people who have been met by an extraordinary Savior.

“Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it.”

Psalm 127:1

Who we are

Baptist in doctrine, missionary in heart, lowcountry in address

We are a Missionary Baptist congregation — a church that holds to the historic Baptist faith and takes seriously the command of Christ to carry the gospel to the ends of the earth. We gather on Trask Parkway in Sheldon, a small community in the lowcountry of South Carolina, and we are grateful to be here.

On any given Sunday you will find Sunday School classes at 10:00 in the morning and worship at 11:00. You will hear the Word read and preached, you will hear singing that comes up out of people who mean it, and you will hear prayers offered for the sick, the lost, and the community around us.

We are not a large congregation, and we do not try to be something we are not. What we are is a family — people who know each other’s names, who cook for each other when there is a need, and who will notice if you are missing.

Whether you have been in church your whole life or have never set foot in one, you will find a warm welcome and an open Bible here.

Our pastor

Pastor Franklyn Ruth

Pastor Franklyn Ruth leads Canaan Missionary Baptist Church, preaching and teaching the Word and shepherding the congregation. He is a pastor who is found among the people — in the sanctuary on Sunday, at Bible study on Wednesday, and at the hospital bedside and the kitchen table in between.

If you would like to speak with the pastor, call the church at 843-846-4175 or send a note through the contact page. He would be glad to hear from you, whether your question is about joining the church, about baptism, or about a burden you are carrying.

“Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.”

2 Timothy 4:2

What we believe

The faith we hold and preach

These are the convictions at the heart of Canaan Missionary Baptist Church. If you would like to talk through any of them, the pastor would welcome the conversation.

01

The Scriptures

We believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God, and that it is sufficient to teach us what to believe and how to live. You will hear it read and preached plainly from this pulpit.

02

Jesus Christ

We believe Jesus is the Son of God, crucified for our sins and raised for our justification. Salvation is by grace through faith in Him, and it is offered to every person who will come.

03

The Church

We believe the church is a body of baptized believers gathered for worship, for the teaching of the Word, for the observance of the ordinances, and for one another.

04

The Ordinances

We observe believer’s baptism by immersion and the Lord’s Supper, both given to the church by Christ Himself.

05

The Mission

We believe the church is sent. As a Missionary Baptist church we support the work of the gospel beyond our own walls, and we take the Great Commission as our own.

06

The Hope

We believe Christ is coming again, and that the people of God will be with Him forever. That hope is what shapes how we live now.

We are glad to answer questions about the church, about baptism, or about what it means to follow Christ. Call the church at 843-846-4175 or send us a message.

There is a place for you here

Come and worship with us this Sunday, or stop in for Bible study on Wednesday. If you have questions first, we would love to hear from you.
